Katha, in Filipino parlance, means one’s creation. It serves as a hallmark of Philippine design excellence. The Awards recognized product design
and innovation that combine the ideals of form and function. Since it’s launching in 1983, the Katha Awards seek to inspire and challenge exporters as well as designers to constantly innovate and develop designs and products for export. 

The Katha Award for Best in Product Design (Home Furnishing) was given to Obra Cebuana, Inc. for the company’s adherence to the highest standards of creativity and craftsmanship, thus elevating Philippine-made products to an art form.  Obra Cebuana’s winning entry was the low-back yellow rattan chair with solihiya weaving.

The Mugna Heritage Award is given to a designer or a design that either

1. Raises the standards of craft design and craft making among local communities; or
2. A design or designer who introduces technology and new designs to preserve and continue traditions in local carving, weaving (cane or rattan), or metalworking with renewed interest.

This citation was awarded to Obra Cebuana, Inc. for its Nena Chair designed by Archt. Rene M. Ybañez and is made of rattan poles with rattan slats weaving in solihiya pattern.
